I know this was a different unit, but we have a 3583.  Sometime back we had
to do a
microcode upgrade AND replace all the internal slots in the library because
evidently
the NON-IBM Brand LTOs are slightly different in size, enough so the tapes
drug and
the picker had problems pulling them out due to additional drag.

This was the IBM solution.

This implies, at least to me, that IBM may want to keep to tighter
tolerances than
are written in the standard for LTOs.  Or the 'real standard' and the
'published standard'
for the tape cartridges may be different as they are implemented.

Standards are good.  Everyone should have 2 or 3 :)

Actually standards, unless written exceptionally well, are subject to
interpretation.
Take a look at my favorite, the RS-232 standard :) that has been around
longer than
I have been in the computing field.
