It started before ADSM with WDSF/VM   .....

Yes that's ADSM on VM/390 mainframe.  It started at Almaden Research
in San Jose , CA.  Like any good product that saves a piece of IBM's
backside it came out of a personal need for workstation backups at that
facility.
