Well, better to have diagnostic info come out at error time than just
an "*SM failed" message. The now-notorious ANR9999D message is a
catch-all emissions point for conditions which should be rare and
which indicate some kind of internal error. From talking to IBM I
understand that the use of the message is supposed to be minimized
over time, with various conditions getting their own messages, etc.
because it's really an undocumented message (in that it can be
anything) and as such requires going through IBM to get an explanation
and solution. We've seen in some cases that if the message specified
probable causes in real-world terms, the customer could have been back
in operation sooner, having resolved the site cause.
