Re: 3590E and compression

Hi,
As I read on the list before : to do this
migration, first you should mark the not
empty tapes to read-only and as their data
begins to expire, new tapes will be
released and reused.
When they are reused, the original 10 GB
(up to 30 GB) will be 20 GB (up to 60 GB).
Is it true that new media for 40 GB (up to
120 GB) is available or due to be released
to 3590-E4s ?
regards,
Rodrigo

Werner,
I have not heard this. What I have seen documented is the fact that
one cannot write the new 256-track format onto 3590 B-series tapes
(that is until they become scratch again and are automatically
reformatted with the 256-track from the beginning of the volume).

We plan to upgrade our 3590 drives to the new model E. Recently I heard
that though you can write to the old 3590 cartridges with the new
drives, you cannot use compression.
I cannot believe that this is true. Can anybody clarify this? Any
experiences?
Werner
