Eric,
        Try using the 'show libr' command.  It is undocumented, but it will 
give you
some insight into what AIX thinks about the drives.  One thing that is
important is the line about the drive being busy:

    DRIVE02 (/dev/rmt2):
      type=8, mod=17, busy=0, online=1,
      avail=1, polled=0, elem=65535, createPending=0,
      ...


If busy=1 and your "q mount" command shows there is nothing mounted then(as we
have found) the discrepency can be corrected by restarting /etc/lmcpd.  I hope
this applies to your library, I'm only familiar with our 3494.
