OK, based on feedback I have gone ahead and run "del volhist t=dbb
tod=-10". This has worked fine and the q volhist gives the correct result.

However we also use DRM, and the DBB volumes are automatically managed
by DRM so their movements to offsite storage, and back again when they
are no longer required, are managed properly. The additional tapes
have now simply been removed from the DRM database without going
through vaultretrieve and courierretrieve states. Therefore for our
operators they will have no idea that the tapes need to be retrieved
from offsite storage.

I will just need to reconcile between the DRM list and what we actually
have stored. But I wouldn't like to do this everyday!

To me this sounds like a bug. The DRM should not delete the volume
entry until it has been retreived from the offsite location.

For the moment I won't be running this schedule on a daily basis!

Any comments?

Regards,
Simon

| Hi Simon,
|
| No, there is no parameter to set. You need to set up the 'delete
| volhist' schedule.
|
| There is one thing that I have noticed since upgrading to V3. When an
| EXPIRE INVENTORY job finishes, the summary information written to the
| activity log says how many backup and archive objects were deleted, but
| it also says how many DB backup volumes were deleted. In our case this
| is always 0. Anyone know what this is about? Maybe there is a setting
| somewhere so that EXPIRE INVENTORY takes care of old DB backup volumes.

|
| This sounds strange to me! My DB backups seem to be kept for 1
| month
| and then expire, so I am dedicating 30 3590 tapes to holding DB
| backups. As mentioned this is a bit excessive. Isn't there a
| parameter somewhere to specify how long to keep them for rather
| than
| running a regular schedule with "del volhist t=dbb tod=-###"?
|
| The only thing I can think of is that it uses the Standard
| Policy
| Domain, which in my case has the backup retention set to 30
| days. I
| suppose I could just reduce this.
|
| Cheers,
| Simon

| | I have to jump in for a sec. I also use the "del volhist t=dbb
| tod=-###"
| | command but I find that
| | ADSM finds that the media is innaccessable the next time the
| particular
| | tape comes up in the
| | rotation for database backups. Any thoughts on that subject?
