Tim !

Oracle has backup features (EBU on Oracle7 and RMAN on Oracle8). The backup
can be done to ADSM through the ADSM connect agent. You can run "HOT" backups
with oracle 7 and oracle8, which mean that you don't have to close your
database. In Oracle 8 you can also run incremental backups (cumulative or
incremental). You can perform Full database or partial backups/restore.

EBU or RMAN send the backup object to ADSM through the ADSM API and ADSM
Connect agent.

You can read about database backup in the following books/articles:
1. Using ADSM to backup databases - the current version is about Oracle 7. I
was on the team who wrote the next version, it will be published on the
internet and hard copy by the end of 2Q. It includes Oracle7 and Oracle8:
features, configuration and using.

2. Using ADSM to backup database - white paper, you can find it on ADSM home
page.

3. Oracle documentation , which I consider very poor regarding Backups, but
it can give you a very good knowledge about the backup features.

Let me know if you need any more help
