Greetings,
I am just getting my feet wet, ADSM-wise, so I am sorry if
these newbie questions are beneath most of you, but I am having trouble
getting a straight answer out of our local IBM support:

1) We have 3590 autoloader tape drives connected to our AIX ADSM
server. When tape drives are loaded in to the autoloader, they have
to be scanned in order for ADSM to be able to know which volumes are
in available. This is a slow and tedious process, measured in
geologic terms. My question is, when we only change one tape in the
autoloader in order to do a restore, can we only scan the one slot
that got changed, and not the whole device? My operators are
telling me that they can only scan the entire autoloader, and wait and
wait. Is that true. It would be MUCH faster to scan only one slot.

2) We have an AIX ADSM server, and would like to back up MVS clients.
I have been told by the customer wanting to back up MVS that the AIX
server won't support MVS PDS, and other MVS file structures, and that
we should have installed MVS as the server. Is that correct. Is
there a special feature I need to install on either side to support
this? I have trouble believing this, since ADSM bills itself as being
a any-to-any sort of backup solution.

Please reply if you can shed any light on these questions.

Also, if there is an FAQ for this list, please point me to it so I
can read that before posting redundant questions to the list.

Thanks in advance,

John Schneider
