Thanks, Andy..
You mention the BACKUP VOLH command (I didn't realize there was such a
command). We backup the volume history file daily with DFDSS. I plan
to restore the backup copy in the event of a disaster or disaster test.
I noticed in the manual it says
If you do not specify a file name, ADSM stores the information in all
files specified with the VOLUMEHISTORY option in the server options
  file.
But I noticed, volume history information is automatically stored in
the file specified in the server options file... So if I issued this
command with no files specified, it'd put a second copy of it in the
same file? I'm confused about this command, and whether or not it's
required for me to get a successful database restore. It sounds as if
it could just take the place of my DFDSS backup. Does anyone know?
Thanks!

Consider the following sequence in backing up for disaster recovery:

Back up your storage pools (BACKUP STGPOOL)

Back up the ADSM database (BACKUP DB)

Run BACKUP VOLHIST to back up volume history

Run BACKUP DEVCONFIG to back up device configuration information

It's also a good idea to have the output from these commands on hand in case
you
need to restore your ADSM server:

Q DB F=D
Q DBV F=D
Q LOG F=D
Q LOGV F=D

Make backup copies external to ADSM of the volume history and device
configuration
files.
Send the following items offsite:

Newly created copy storage pool volumes
ADSM database backup media
External backup copies of volume history and device configuration files
Output from the above QUERY commands
ADSM server options file

There may be other variations on this that other folks might suggest, but I
think I've got the highlights.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
