I've just recently started using ADSM, and I have a few configuration
questions/comments:
1. We have been backing up all of our systems to a pair of EXB10 8mm
libraries. We have purchased a DLT 4700 library, but would like to
continue using those EXB10s for a copy storage pool. Can ADSM use
both libraries in some way to backup the DLT library?
2. I have not been impressed with ADSM's performance so far, but
suspect I am missing some tuning options. The initial full backup
took about 4 days with ADSM and the DLT, when it used to take 36
hours with a competitor's backup product and the two EXB10s.
I have configured ADSM to use the default backuppool with two 1GB
disk volumes and nextpool set to the DLT.
Upping MOVEBatchsize, MOVESizethresh, and TCPWindowsize have
helped, but are there some other obvious ways to tune this
configuration? I realize that I haven't given much information
about our setup, but I don't know enough about ADSM yet to know
where to begin.
3. With the DRM tools, what does OFFSITE mean to ADSM? At the end of
a month, I would like to move the DLT volumes to the bank, and have
ADSM do a complete fullsave of all systems. It seems silly to
purchase another DLT4700 just so that I could make backup
copygroups. What is the normal way to do this - update the policy
group mode to absolute?
4. I would like to see a new IBM document for those of us who are more
used to traditional Unix backup systems:
"Dump-vs-ADSM: A Dummies Guide to ADSM".
In one recent comp.unix.aix posting, Ole Nielsen described my
situation very well:
... configuring the ADSM server can be a nightmare. There is
an installation manual, but it only covers selected, simple
topics. And it doesn't define the terminology, so you often
don't understand what the whole thing is about. There is no
such thing as a "ADSM Server Tutorial" manual, ... You can
read the ADSM server manual only if you already know ADSM
inside out, a real boot-strap problem...
I'm in this very situation now. I'm beginning to understand the
ADSM philosophy, but a Dump-vs-ADSM translation and/or a Beginner's
guide would really help.
