I'll put in my $.02; hopefully others will too.

1. I would be interested in seeing something from IBM on the number (or
percentage) of licenses that they sell too. We do MVS, but I see lots of
questions on the VM and AIX servers here. We use Silos, and let them manage
the tapes; we tell our tape manager (CA-1) that ADSM will manage the pools,
and thus are in "never scratch" status.

2. Server restores - depends on the server. Some Unix servers require that
you restore the OS, then install ADSM and restore everything else. For
NetWare version 3.x, we have built a process for complete restores (C drive
and the base NetWare code to get the server started) that fits on several
diskettes. Works well for us. I have also heard people reinstall NetWare
too.

3. As you suggest, Network performance depends mostly on your network. Howev
er, I would be sure that my backup product compresses the data BEFORE it is se
nt across the network. That sounds pretty dumb, but I know of at least one
that doesn't.

We're in the process of evaluating ADSM as our server backup and restore
software and, of course, I have quite a few questions. Just a few of the
questions :

1. Do most ADSM users pipe their data to a mainframe and then manage the
tapes with mainframe tools?

2. How does one go about restoring a server whose hard drive has just
crashed. I realize there may be many different ways to do this, but I'm
just looking for a general answer. Are software files and user data files
restored separately or differently.

3. How does ADSM match up to other backup software in terms of speed. I
also realize this has a lot to do with Network bandwidth, but, again, I'm
looking for a general answer. Hopefully someone has done some benchmarking.

Any feedback will be very much appreciated. Thank you!
