I need to look at the size of my vtape items in my TSM 6.4.1 server. I have backups that are failing due to large size and it skips the file.
I am getting the following errors:

10/10/16 23:01:10 ANS1228E Sending of object '/ora_fra01/fra/BCGPRD/backupset/level_0/2016_10_07/ora_db/BCGPRD_DB_lvl_0_20161007_e7rhpubc_1_1.bkp' failed
10/10/16 23:01:10 ANS1312E Server media mount not possible

What's the errors in the activity log at 10/10/16 23:01:10 (plus or minus a few minutes)? That's not necessarily due to the size of the vtape, it could be due to not enough scratch tapes.

pardon my ignorance, I am learning TSM as I go, in the activity log I see the following:
10/10/16 23:00:28 ANR2579E Schedule CRIT_AIX_9PM in domain STANDARD for node
HQORAPRD01 failed (return code 12). (SESSION: 7524)

That's not the out of space error, that's the result of the schedule as failed. Look before that for any errors regarding space. It's likely that there are several messages that as a group mean something.

Thanks for all the replies.

Is there a way to alter the virtual tape size? and how would I do this?

Actually, server mount not possible is when you try to mount more drives than the MAXNUMMP.

What's the value of "Maximum Mount Points Allowed" in: QUERY NODE HQORAPRD01 F=D?
Do you see ANR0535W or ANR0539W in the activity log prior to the schedule failure?
Were all the paths and drives online? Q DRIVE and Q PATH

You would have to do that on the VTL, but 99% chance that's not the cause of your failure. You can backup objects larger than the tape capacity and they will span across multiple tapes.
