Upgrading to 5.5 gone wrong. Please advice

two questions:

First:
Can I install 5.5 over top of 5.3.4. (run the exe without uninstall 5.3.4)?

Second:
Can I install 5.5 from scratch and then restore a 5.3 DB to it?

Thats what I tried

I tried installing overtop and it did not work. Its mangled my server so now I need to know if I install the 5.5 on a clean server can I restore an old DB to it 5.3? Or do I need to install 5.3 and try to upgrade again?

You can restore the 5.3 database using the 5.5 binaries but once the database is restored, you must perform the "dsmserv upgrade db" on it before you can start it.
