Hi,

well - BBB is right - DR of TSM server is not an easy task and you have to understand many concepts of TSM - DB protection, device configuration, primary/copy pool function ....
Basically - for backup you need to perform TSM DB backups (Full/Incr/Snapshot) and keep "magic four" files
dsmserv.dsk - describes DB and RLOG volumes
dsmserv.opt - configuration on the server
volhist.out - information about volumes - you need that for identifiing DB backups
devconfig.out - describes the device configuration

For restore you need to install TSM server code, return files where they belong and restore TSM DB.

However - if anything is different from the original configuration (different location/size of DB volumes, another hardware or SCSI mapping) then you have to manually edit the "magic four" files - and it really pays when you know what are you doing ....

how can i restore tsm server backup.....!

Harry and BBB please help i flow these step but problem is when i restore 4,5 and 6 step not run canu tell me why plzzzzzzzzzz................!
both onsite and drsite we have same hardware, same machine same tape library.........and also i insert backup tape on Dr site tape library................!

If you have DRM license use it and run prepare to create DR plan.
The things you need for DR are
1. Database backup: ba db dev=lto type=full
2. Backup of volume history and device configuration: ba devconfig, ba volhist
3. Save a copy of your dsmserv.dsk, dsmserv.opt, devcnfg.out, volhist.out files on a CD or SAN file.

To restore
1. Copy the saved dsmserv.opt to C:\PROGRAM FILES\TIVOLI\TSM\SERVER\DSMSERV.OPT
2. Copy the saved volhist.out to "C:\PROGRA~1\TIVOLI\TSM\SERVER1\VOLHIST.OUT"
3. Copy the saved devcnfig.out to "C:\PROGRA~1\TIVOLI\TSM\SERVER1\DEVCNFG.OUT
4. Initialize the log and database, the # will be however many you had and format
to the drive you had them on "C:\PROGRAM FILES\TIVOLI\TSM\SERVER\DSMSERV"
-k "Server1" format # FILE:"E:\TSM\DRM\LOG.VOLUMES" #
FILE:"E:\TSM\DRM\DB.VOLUMES
5. Restore the server database to latest version backed up per the volume history

file. C:\PROGRAM FILES\TIVOLI\TSM\SERVER\DSMSERV -k "Server1" restore db todate=mm/dd/yyyy totime=hh:mm:ss source=dbb

6. After that you can start the server "C:\PROGRAM FILES\TIVOLI\TSM\SERVER\DSMSERV" -k "Server1

.....!

Hi,

if you are not familiar with the formating/initializing the DB/RLog volumes under the OS, here is a workaround.

After installation of the TSM on the new machine (target - restored TSM will run on this machine), initialize the first TSM instance (using TSM MMC) using "minimal configuration"
It asks only for the first DB and RLOG volumes to be created and few other (unimportant) questions.

When you have this instance running, use standard TSM commands to define new DB and RLOG volumes
def dbvol <filename> formatsize=<megabytes>
def logvol <filename> formatsize=<megabytes>

and assign the space to the DB and RLOG

extend DB <size>
extend log <size>

Make sure everything is ok (use "q db" and "q log")

Now you have new, initialized, assigned (and large enough) DB and RLOG volumes AND new dsmserv.dsk

Now halt this new instance (using HALT, or stop the service)

Copy the three important files in place (volhist.out, devconfig.out and dsmserv.opt)

and run "dsmserv restore db ....blahblahblah"
(you can omit the "-k server1" option - it takes the first instance by default)

Let us know the result

Harry

ok harry 1st i'll try this then i let u know okz.........!

but one question come in my mind in our case dsmserv.dsk file is not mention originally i create db and log file in
d:\tsmdata\server1\db1.dsm
d:\tsmdata\server1\log1.dsm

don't u thing i create db and log file on the same location in dr site ???????

also tell me where i paste "devconfig, volhist, dsmserv.opt" file in that location :
C:\PROGRA~1\TIVOLI\TSM\SERVER1\

or another location ??????????????????

regard adeel

Hi,

you do not need to create TSM DB and RLog volumes in the same location at the DR site - all you need is to have volumes large enough AND have corresponding dsmserv.dsk
the location of the config files - if you did follow the defaults when installing TSM, then put it in the folder you mentioned
C:\PROGRA~1\TIVOLI\TSM\SERVER1\

Hope it helps

Harry

hey Harry;

i face problem to restore tsm server...........! dude i follow's these step for restroing that u givein me.......!

1) install TSM Server on the new machne
2)initialize TSM instance with min configuration.
3)defibe DB and LOG file's
4)Halt tsm server or stop tsm service.
5)paste (Volhist.out,devconfig.out and dsmserv.opt") on that location
c:\program files\tivoli\tsm\server1\
6) open command prompt and goto c:\program files\tivoli\tsm\server\
and type this command
dsmserv restore db devlcass=hbllib_class volumenames=A00077L3

but this command not run this error message came.........!

C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\server>dsmserv restore db devclass=hbllib_class volu

Hi,

I would check if the TSM has read rights to the devconfig.out and I would add the line
devconfig "c:\program files\tivoli\tsm\server1\devconfig.out"
to the dsmserv.opt

Hope it helps

If you want, contact me via ICQ or Skype chat - we can solve that online

Harry

ok harry i'll check this then i update you......!

Looks like your DB need 4Gb, so extend your db to 5gb. Then it should work I think
