Hi everyone,

I need some help! My TSM Server crash: database crashed - Recovery log maxed out and full.

So, in fisrt time I created a log file with the dsmfmt command, and format this log with the dsmserv format command (tsmlog.005).

But, when I use tue dsmserv extend log command, I've got this error:

dsmserv extend log tsmlog.005 64

Also, what can I do with "VARY ON required" !?!?

So, when I try to launch my TSM Server, I've got also this error message:

So, here is some information about my server:

Any suggestion????

Thank's

I see scary things you need to investigate.

1. There is no /usr/tivoli/tsm/db filesystem yet this is where your db files are. They add up to 8.5GB which is more than the size of any of the filesystems you list - did you truncate the list?

2. Your db volumes modified date is November but the logs are Jan 08.

3. The size of the log volumes as listed by TSM is not the same as the size of the files in your ls -l output

4. TSM says you have a /usr/tivoli/tsm/incr/tsmlog.005 but you have a file of that name in /usr/tivoli/tsm/log/tsmlog.005

5. You should not have run the dsmserv format command at any point in this process. Only dsmfmt and dsmserve extend log.

So....I'm pretty sure you're screwed.

-What does your dsmserv.dsk file have in it?
-What does dsmserv display dbvolumes say?
-What was the output from the dsmserv format command that you ran?
-Why are your db volumes so old and in a filesystem that doesn't exist? Obviously you're not telling the whole story.

Unless you can make sense of all the rubbish you seem to have going on there, you need to restore the TSM db.

Your database and recovery log were truncated when you used the `dsmserv format` command. You are now to the point where you must restore from the last TSM DB backup. I would call IBM to verify that there is no other option but to restore your TSM DB.

There is a chance that the filesystem has not been mounted

I thought that too initially but he got output of his db files from this:
root@hdnform:/usr/tivoli/tsm/db $ls -al

So it could be the "old files hidden underneath a mounted filesystem" trick, but ... the next filesystem up for him is /, which isn't anywhere near big enough to hold those files. So I think maybe he didn't post all the filesystems from his df output.

Geez I must be tired, I completely missed the display of the directory, let along the presence of a lost + found file

!!!

Thank's BBB,

It's not my TSM server!!!!! It's a support call I've received! The TSM server is down since november 2007!

Unless you can make sense of all the rubbish you seem to have going on there, you need to restore the TSM db.

Where I can found the last good backup of the TSM?

My god! Nothing about the DBBACKUP in the volhistory file!

Look that (tail -100 but all the file look's like that):

Simon

In order to start fresh, you must:

- stop any TSM services/daemons that are running
- decide to either re-use existing files or delete and create new files
- if delete/create, delete the existing DB and log files then use "dsmfmt" to create new files.
- if re-use, leave existing files in place.
- format the db/log files using the "dsmserv format" command
- startup the TSM service/daemon and reconfigure devclasses/libraries/drives/paths

Details for any of the commands can be found in the TSM Admin Guide.

You can stop your existing TSM server and then copy the DB files, log files, devconfig file, volhist file and dsmserv.dsk file to the DR server. If you place all the files in the exact same location as they are on the prod server, it should start up and run just as if it was the prod server. You'll need to update things like your paths, stgpools, devclasses, etc to reflect the DR server.
