Yes it is possible. When we stated using LTO (IBM 3583) we were using TSM4.1 and since there wasn't an LTO device class they were set up as generic. What you need to plan for is when you upgrade to TSM 5.1 as we did we found that TSM 5.1 now had a deviceclass for LTO, recognized the device as LTO and during the upgrade made changes to the device class. This made all our tapes from TSM4.1 unreadable since it was now expecting the tapes to be in an LTO format.
