We're using an IBM Shark and need a way to monitor the disks for failure. I'd like a small scale snmp monitor where I can load the mib and then watch for alerts but all I'm seeing online are fairly hefty full scale network monitors.

Is anyone using anything particularly good that they would recommend - or know of anything cool?

The shark has internal monitoring for faulures and will dial-home to IBM in the event of a failure. What we have done, is ask the IBM CE to modify the ESS notify process to page our datacenter operators at the same time it dials home to IBM. This lets us know there is some kind of failure and that IBM will be calling. As far as I know, you can't monitor the ESS with snmp. This may have changed since we set our monitoring up though.

The ESS can be configured to send EMAILS or send SNMP traps. This can be done from the ESS Specialist ===> Problem Notification panel. In addition to the ESS phoning home we have ours configured to send a EMAIL to our CELL phones. In order to send EMAILS outside your network your CE has to enable Smart Host Relay.

Hope this helps ;)
