For our logarchive backups to disk pool, and our Oracle databases that backup to disk pool, we have TSM client compression ON. For our LANFree Oracle backups, we have TSM client compression OFF.

Also our tape drives are set to compress data at that level.

Our DBA is asking if we should turn on RMAN compression. I think we should not, since TSM does it.

Is this correct thinking?

Doesn't matter where compression is turned ON. If the stream being fed to TSM is compressed, TSM will try to and if can't, it will just accept as is. The only caveat is wasted CPU cycles.

I have seen extremely slow RMAN backup when using RMAN compression (set by DBA). But you may try, and tell us your impressions.
