I'm looking for a best practice for a retention policy. Our current policy is as follow:
Versions Data Exists = 30
Versions Data Deleted = 1
Retain Extra Versions = 30
Retain Only Version = 60

We are also running monthly archives of our systems.

is this a common practice. i'm looking for a best practice situation

I don't think you understand the concept of data retention and the policies that apply to it.

Data retention is a matter of business needs and requirements. No one in this forum can tell you that this or that is the best practice. It is up to you to find out from your bosses or management what should the data retention be.

If I tell you to keep the data retention as no limit, apply it and ended up with a very big DB environment, you will someday find out that I 'lied'. However, this is not true. The no limit may be significant for me as my best practice but a 'stupid' (pardon the word and no pun intended) setting for you.

You really have to discuss this with your management or customer as the case may be.
