We run TSM with a 3583 library and currently have 55 private tapes residing within library leaving only 5 free slots for daily tape movements. This means we have to checkout tapes before we can run a db backup (we have a script to run a db backup every morning but fails because no scratch tape available). The problem we now have is that we have run out of our stock of scratch tapes and need to get tapes back from our offsite storage company. Running a script to query the db shows us that there are currently appx. 70 tapes offsite that are using less than 10% of tape capacity (many are using just 0.1% - all tapes in question contain collocated data). We have scheduled reclamations that run on Wednesdays and at the weekend but does anyone know if there is a way of reclaiming these tapes back or will their return date be dictated by retention policy and the fact that they contain collocated data?

Set your reclamation value to 90 or above and let the job complete this will force out those little used tapes...

When you set the reclaim value to let say 55 TSM very efficiently processes primarily by object size... this means that all the eliglble tape are being reclaimed as a group and you will see all the tapes trickle towards 99.9 free and all those with very small objects will free up at the very end.

good luck!

I'm assuming that you have the primarly storage pools collocated but the copy storage pool as non-collocated. Not recommended setting copy storage pools to use collocated=yes for efficiency purposes.

You can also use the "move data" command which performs what we call manual reclamations....ie allows you to select which tapes to reclaim. Tthe fact that the primary(original) storage pool were collocated, really doesn't make a difference on when the tapes come back. the retention policy do, since the retention policies determine how soon files will expires...ie...tapes will go more and more empty until they hit whatever you set as the reclamation threshold.

HI,

we have had similar Problems with the Space Reclamation.

Our Problem was a defect tape which was set to readonly or unavailable.

Much luck
