Number of volumes used by backup stgpool

TSM 5.1.5 on OS/390, using 3494 ATL. I just rebuilt my offsite copy pool from scratch; the 'backup stgpool' operation used many more volumes than I expected. It appears that it just copied each volume in the primary tape pool to a new volume in the copy storage pool. I had expected a little more sophistication and some attempt to use 100% of the output volumes. Have I interpreted what I saw happening correctly? Does TSM really just copy the volumes or is there something more sinister here?

questions that would spring to mind are:-



1) have you ggot collocation set to yes on the copypool

2) have you got a maxprocesses other than 1 set on the backup stg though if you are using many volumes this is probably irrelevant.

3) does the activity log reveal anything other than many volume mounts
