HSM and SAN

Hello,

Is it possible to use SAN network with HSM?

We have SAN setup and two IBM 3494 tape libraries and One TSM server.

Tape libraries are used for HSM purpose with Tivoli Storage Manager.

I want data sent over SAN, not over LAN, to tape libraries when migration happens from disk to tape. But I wonder whether this is possible.

I think this will increase migration speed.

I wonder whether SAN can be used only for backup process or whether it can be

used for HSM too.

Yes you can set up SAN - the LUN/s need to be attached to the TSM Server and then setup the filesystem and volumes on the TSM Server. LANfree backups are far quicker than LAN - we only use SAN disk as a staging area (otherwise too expensive) for the backups which are then migrated to tape (whether this be your primary storage pool and copy storage pool, etc). If you can afford the expense, use SAN as your primary storage pool.
