Hi All,

I am working on TSM server version 5.5.2 connected to IBM TS3200 Library with two drives and a capacity of 40 slots. For sometimes now i can only check-in a maximum of three scratch tapes and the library gets full. How can i free some space in the Library since this is making all space reclamation to fail?

Seems like you need to do one or more of the following:

  • Enable compression
  • Purchase more slots (expansion) for your library.
  • Reduce the amount of data you keep done in one of two ways
    • Backup less data/servers
    • Reduce the retention/versions
  • Upgrade to a denser media (i.e. if on LTO3, upgrade to LTO5, etc)
For right now:

  • Check out a few 'FULL' and highly utilized (i.e. 80% +) tapes to make room for scratch tape and allowing reclamation to run (or manually move the data).
    • Please Note: with this option is I do not know of a simple way to ensure the data on the tapes you check out has been backed up to your offsite tapes
My 2 cents

Hi

TS3200 only allows for 48 Tapes, and if you haven't changed the IO slot to normal slots in the web gui on the Library this would be 45 volumes max seen from TSM. You can't purchase extention to TS3200 in the form of more slots. I'm guessing the DEVCLASS is defined with format=DRIVES so compression to tape should be active, you might try to run reclamation lower, "update stgpool <stgpool_name> reclaim=60" or lower and see if space reclaim kicks in. To help us you might wan't to send us q devcl f=d, q libv, show library output.

Hi

I sounds as if your tape storage has started the death-spiral. Lack of space due to high amount of reclaimable files - and no free capacity to allow reclamation.

You could consider adding disk-storage - a couple of TBs. And then either do a move data from tape to disk or define the disk-pool as a reclamation pool for your tape pool.

But it's hardly a long term solution.

Good luck :)
