Have a question about point in time restores. If an admin created a desktop shortcut today and then we did a point in time restore to say two weeks ago...will that remove the desktop shortcut?

Even if the desktop shortcut has been or has not been backed up, by creating a FULL system restore from the ground up, the system will be like it was two weeks ago - no dekstop shortcut. Again, if a full system restore - a BMR in other word.

If the restore is a FULL restore in place, meaning files are only the ones (not BMR, not system files) restored from two weeks back, any old deleted files from two weeks back will be restored FULLY but NO new files will disappear.

thanks. So if he created the shortcut today and it has never been backed up...and then we did a point in time restore of C, D, E and system state, system object to 10/25... The restore completed, yet we can still see the desktop shortcut he created. So it doesnt seem right.

The desktop will not be there if it was a BMR - meaning disks were format and everything restored.

No disk were formatted. The just wanted to bring the system back to the way it looked on the 25th. The system wasnt rebuild from scratch. They were having a problem and couldnt not determine what was causing it..so had us restore the entire system PIT to that day. So to me...if they desktop icon had never been backed up and never existed on the 25th, I would think the restore didnt work correctly.

okay thanks. Yea, they didnt reformat anything. But they wanted to know why their shortcut showed up after we did the restore. So just wanted to find out some info because honestly never tested this before.
