Hello all,

we currently to have a restore problem with our Exchange Server. We need to restore the "Public Folder Store" to the "First Storage Group" on Server WWTHOR. As you see these are the standard values for the storage group and the public folder database.

On the Server WWTHOR we start the TDP Client and select the database from the last online backup. The database can be overriden by a restore process (just in case we made an offline copy of the pub.* files").

When we execute the restore the TSM Server loads the correct tape. The tape contents is:

----------q con 000126 ------------------- end
Node Name Type Filespace FSID Client's Name for File
Name
--------------- ---- ---------- ---- --------------------------------------
WWTHOR_EXC Bkup WWTHOR\Fi- 1 \data\0001\Mailbox Store (WWTHOR)\
rst Stor- full
age Group
WWTHOR_EXC Bkup WWTHOR\Fi- 1 \data\0000\Public Folder Store
rst Stor- (WWTHOR)\ full
age Group
WWTHOR_EXC Bkup WWTHOR\Fi- 1 \data\0001\Public Folder Store
rst Stor- (WWTHOR)\ full
age Group
WWTHOR_EXC Bkup WWTHOR\Fi- 1 \logs\ full
rst Stor-
age Group
----------q con 000126 ------------------- end

So the Public Folder Store of First Storage Group on WWTHOR exists.
Next up is the error message in tdpexc.log:

----------dsierror.log ------------------- end
09/04/2007 14:51:11 ANS0221E There was an error in the TSM API internals.
----------dsierror.log ------------------- end

Now that is not very helpful. But we have further information from the EventLog:
----------eventlog ------------------- end
Ssource: M***changeIS
Category: Exchange Backup Restore
Event-Id: 9635
Failed to find a database to restore to from the Microsoft Active Directory.
Storage Group specified on the backup media is 0b82c26e-3c3f-4dc6-b8bc-7a5d7070dbe0.
Database specified on backup media is Public Folder Store (WWTHOR), error is 0xc7fe1f42.
----------eventlog ------------------- end

As expected the content redirect link to the Microsoft Homepage is dead.

This is quite funny as the storage group is not displayed by name. Checking with ADSI Edit reveals that the storage group is available by name in the Active Directory.

So what happens to the storage group name on its way from the TSM Server to the Exchange Server? q con shows the correct storage group name but the event log says otherwise.

Any help is appreciated.

Yours clueless

have you attempted to restore into a Recovery Storage Group and then use eseutil from there?

are you using the tdp gui for this operation? if not, can you provide the command line syntax that you are using for this operation?

ad 1: A Public Folder Restore into the Recovery Storage Group is not supported by Microsoft.
ad 2: We used the TDP GUI.

The error isn't really anything to do with TSM, its coming back from Exchange.

I think you can ignore the funny hex storage group name, I believe it always looks like that (its an ID rather than a name).

Have you read this? It even gives an exact example of your error number 0xc7fe1f42 and what caused it.

Hi BBB,

your right, this is an Exchange and not a TDP problem. I'll post the solution these days to give everybody an update regarding this MS documentation mess.

Kind regards
