I know there are ways to do a bricklevel backup using TDP and exmerge, but i was wondering if anybody is using (or knows of) a third party client for their exchange backups? We currently use BMC SQL Backtrack for our SQL backups and i'd like something similar for exchange.

Thanks again for the help.

Hi,

If you use Exchange Server 2003 see http://my.adsm.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpBB_14&file=index&action=viewtopic&topic=3579

If you use Exchange 2000 Aelita Recovery Manager is perhaps the easiest and most powerful tool - see http://wm.quest.com/products/recoverymanagerexchange/

It integrates with TSM. Using the Recovry Manager GUI you select from which TSM server you want to restore the specific Exchange backup in question (as you would in the TDP GUI). You then extract this IS to a local disk and from there select one or many mailboxes to restore (drag and drop). You can restore one message, many messages or a full mailbox. This applies to all mailbox objects. You can actually restore any object type to any destination within a mailbox. Download and have a try - it is very easy.

These tools are great and I know that the 2003 mail restore integration is cool, but they still require me to restore a complete information store prior to restoring mailboxes. Is there no way to restore a mailbox without restoring a whole mailstore? If there isn't thats fine, I just need to let my execs know that it isn't a option.

Thanks for the help.

Hi,

To my knowledge there is no way to only extract a mailbox from an IS in TSM, thus you must choose between full bricklevel backup (large overhead both in backup times and data size) or IS restore with Aelita Recovery Manager or Exchange 2003 SP1 mailbox recovery.
