Hello,

I am having a strange problem with tsm Server Version 5, Release 2, Level 2.0

I had to rebuild tsm on a new server from scratch which went well after reading the tsm implementation guide. But, with one problem.

When tsm runs the tast to backup stgpool tape pool to copy pool (whether its done by the daily proc script or manually) tsm grabs the first tape of the backup and puts it in the drive. then grabs a scratch volume and places it in the second drive. The drives read for a moment and sit idle.

An error is then displayed:

Description:

TSM Server Error: Server: TSM_SERVER1 ANR8944E Hardware or media error on drive DRIVE1 (mt9.0.0.2) (OP=TESTREADY, Error Number=1117, CC=305, KEY=04, ASC=44, ASCQ=00,~SENSE=70.00.04.00.00.00.00.0E.00.00.00.00.44.00.00.00.2C.57.00.00.00.00.,~Description=Drive failure). Refer to Appendix D in the 'Messages' manual for recommended action.

At this point, both tapes are put back in the magazine by the autoloader.

What i do know is that both of the drives work, and that one drive or the other are used during backups with out error. Only get errors when trying to backup the copypool.

Any ideas?

Thanks

ANR8944E Hardware or media error on drive drive name (OP=internal code,

Error Number=internal code, CC=internal code, KEY=internal code,

ASC=internal code, ASCQ=internal code, SENSE=sense data, Description=error

description). Refer to Appendix D in the 'Messages' manual for recommended

action.

Explanation: A hardware or media error has occurred while operating on the

designated drive.

System Action: The operation fails.

User Response: Ensure that the DEVICE parameter associated with the drive

was identified correctly in the DEFINE PATH command, and that the device is

currently powered on and ready. The drive or library reference manual

provided with the device usually contain tables that explain the values of

the KEY, ASC, and ASCQ fields. If the problem persists, contact your

hardware support and/or service representative and provide the internal code

values and sense data from this message.

If running on Unix(or Linux), tar some data to the device to make sure that it can write/read. If running Windows, use the Windows Backup utility to write some data to the device. If running on Z Series, good luck
