Hi All:

I am running into a pretty serious error in our production system. When ever I run an audit Library I am receiving several 8455E errors that are stating that the Tape can not be found in the library. The tapes are infact in the library. For example: In the error message it states that the tape should be in Slot 3 but the tape is actually in slot 45. The tape slot in 45 is listed as being in slot 14. The inventory is an absolute mess because we had a very bad mother board failure. Does anyone know of a way to re-index the DB, so that it represents the tapes and the slots they are actually in more accurately. Every time we perform tape check-outs and tape check-ins we receive a ton of errors. The audit library as stated earlier produces even more errors. HELP PLEASE :(

how many tapes in your library ?

Roughly 60. Does this make a difference on a DB inventory or do you have another idea?

Thanks for the response.

just to know
it was an audit libr checkl=b or checkl=y ?

When I use the audit library checklabel=barcode it seems to run fine with no errors. When I run the audit library with no switches is when I see the bulk of errors. The only thing I can think of is that the DB inventory does not match the library.

The "audit library" command should fix the problem; just make sure you use the "checklabel=barcode" option. However, it appears that this is a persistant problem, which means whatever was causing it still exists.

Backplane problem on the TSM server or the library? What type of library? Do you have sole position of this library, or is it shared. If it's shared, I would talk to the other team and/or the librarians to find out what they're doing with it.

Un fortunatley we are in full control. The library functionality is not shared. As I stated I run the audit library checklabel=barcode I do not get any errors, however the audit library does through errors. What is even worse is that when it comes for checkout, some tapes are listed to be checked out, and I receive the error that the tape can not be found in the library even though it is in the jukebox. This morning when Iw as investigating I noticed that almost none of the tapes are listed in the slots that they are actually in.

several ways...
it can be a scanner prob in the library
what library is it ?
can you connect on the library and check the location for some tapes manually ? and compare with tsm invent

I would then run the audit with checklabel=yes; you may have a labelling or barcode scanner problem.

The type of library is most important detail missing. Also, if you run any checkin libv commands while volumes are mounted in drives, TSM has an issue where it will check the new volume in and the library may place that volume in the home slot for tape that's mounted. If you have an IBM 3584 library, you can issue a Inventory operation from the web specialist, then perform that audit libr with checklabel=barcode and it should get synced. Other libraries may have similar options on them to rescan all the volumes before the TSM audit.

The library is a 4560 SLX. I can look on the front screen and find where all of the tapes are located, and then perform an tsm invent. What should I do if they don't match, and if they do match does that indicate a scanner problem?

Again Thanks

agree with that :)
I suggest to perform before a library inventory , to ensure that the library know REAL place of all tapes, then an audit libr checkl=y, then a checkin libv search=y checkl=y

Thanks

I will run the audit libr checkl=y, and then the checkin libv search=y checkl=y. The last question I have is in regards to the library inventory.

How is that performed. I am going to search around, but if there is a good link you can refer me to I would appreciate it.

not sure, I don't know the 4560 SLX but it seems like you have a web GUI to manage the library ? then maybe you should try to reboot the library
normaly it will perform an inventory while coming up
after that, perform tha audit libr on tsm

on tsm, before each command, check that the drives are free
I suggest to disable sessions while your inventory is not cleaned up
don't forget to enable session when everything is fixed
