I am interested in finding out from other AIX administrators on the best way to restore to a new system in a situation where a disastor has happened. For example -- restoring a Production Oracle Database to a new say P595 system. Operating AIX5L Version 5.3 system installed, Oracle 11 installed. TSM 5.4 installed on a TSM Server.

What would we need to do when we have the TSM backup tapes, TSM DRM floppy. Any suggestions would be appreciated. TJackson.

The first thing you really need to do us read the IBM Redbook on Disaster Recovery.
The second thing you need to do is execute the "prepare" command - and then review the DRM Plan - which is the output of the prepare command.
The third thing to do is to put your SA hat on and discuss options at the OS level to recover the platform.
The fourth thing to do is read the TSM Admin Guide front to back.
The last thing is discussing restore options with your Oracle DBA team.
Oh - read up on any historical documents related to DR. If this is your first time - then you have some planning to do.

The cut and chase...Sysback or makesysb for the OS, the vital 5 for TSM recovery, A set of copy pool media which should be vaulted already, your Oracle recovery procedures.

How you proceed is your testing - trial & error, or practice makes perfect exercises.

Happy reading.
