Adaptive subfile backup

Hi,

I want to use adaptive subfile backup for Notebooks with slow internet connection (for travelling users). I can make an entry in the dsm.opt file with "subfileb yes", but if I want to set it in the GUI, under preferences - backup, I can set a cache path and cache size. Do I have to set these values? What happens if I set/do not set them? I can't find information about it.
