Sounds very strange, the type of backup should not cause a drive failure, 
with the exception of incompatible firmware on an LTO-4 drive when doing 
encrypted backups (I ran into this recently).

When it runs the backup, can you unfreeze the tape and use the same drive 
for an OS backup, does it still fail/and down the drive?
