My approach is usually as follows:
Monitor the speed of the backups as they are running to the tape drive.
Once the sum of the speeds of the parallel jobs its the rated speed of =
the
tape drive (accounting for a compression factor of about 2 to be
conservative) you have optimized the "multiplexing to keep the drive =
busy"
goal.
Admittedly it is a bit tricky to know which jobs are writing to the same
tape drive at the same time, but it can be done in real-time by =
combining
information from bpdbjobs (tells you which jobs are running and what =
volumes
they are using) and vmoprcmd (tells you which volumes are in which =
drives).
=20
One of the sample programs provided with the NBU Perl modules (see
http://search.cpan.org/author/DUTCHMAN/) called "nbutop.pl" does just =
this.
=20
Let me know if you'd like to pursue this approach,
 PaulW

Probably a topic that's been discussed many times before.=20

Anyone have some general guidelines for initial settings of the =
multiplexing
attribute within the schedule window of the class?

I have inherited the system and the majority of the classes are set =
across
the board with 7 (fulls and incrementals), and the max setting of the
storage unit properties is at 10.

Backups are completed very well and well within the window , but restore
times are atrocious for any restores that require a significatnt amount =
of
data. Any suggestions for modifications? I have a feeling these =
current
settings are way off.....
