How is recovery faster? Not only does the re-import require oracle to
rebuild all it's data structures, but you have to recreate all the
indexes at well. Plus it does not allow point in time recovery.
Exports are certainly convenient, and good for doing restores of
individual tables, but they definitely are not a faster recovery (at
least for a full restore), and lack many of the benefits of a hot or
cold physical db backup. In my instances at least, exports take a place
alongside hot and cold backups, each providing their strengths.

You don't need to buy any extensions to do hot backups for Oracle.
Granted, BLI backups are really nice, but they are not the only way to
do a hot backup. The main benefit the bLI provides is additional speed
and efficiency, but it's certainly not necessary?

Archive redo logs will buy you nothing in conjunction with exports, they
only work with physical db backups (they need to reference the SCNs in
the datafiles). Not that they aren't good for crash recovery if you've
had long running queries that have been running through the lifespan of
all your active log groups, but to use them for pit recovery, you need a
physical backup.
