Has anyone restored data from a tape that is no longer listed in the
Index?

We have old tapes that we would like to restore data from, but the 
tapes have expired from a NB perspective. I would like to import a
tape and recover data, but I'm not sure how to create an index of 
the contents of the tape(s).

What's the proper way to import the tape and create the index?
