Maybe they really are both pointing at the same physical device... Why
don't you get a blank tape, stick it in one drive.... Write some data to
it... Eg:

tar cvf /dev/rmt1.1 /etc/motd

Then run

Tar tvf /dev/rmt2.1 


And see if you get your tar output back from the second device...
