If, i misunderstood whether or not drives are attached to the filer or

Would you need NDMP Tape server licence applied to the backup server ?
There is a process with which you need to generate ndmp password from the filer, this method actually generates password on the filer and you don't
set it
( password) like you usually do for an account, if you go back and do it again then a new password is generated also, use this password where root
account is not advisable.
Also,
Turn on dnmpd debug 70 ( which ever number you like up to 70 i think) and
watch the filer via telnet to check for any errors.
You can also turn on debugging on from the Networker server for further
insight into what the backup server is doing.

Yes, I think you misunderstood. My NDMP drives are not connected to any filers; they sit in the same tape library that's connect to my backup server. I am doing what I believe is referred to as a three way backup. I do need NDMP licenses, but those are in in place and they have been for quite some time. I actually have one more NDMP license than production NDMP servers even, which is so I can do occasional testing on a non-production NDMP server. I do not recall ever having to generate a password before, but I will look into that.
