Yes, you can.  I've done that too, and I know it works.

I ran a jukebox with four SuperDLT drives in it, but one of them was
defined as a tz89 (DEC DLT7000) for a while, to help us migrate off our
legacy volumes to SuperDLT.  That was a few years ago, but I ran into
the kinds of problems you're seeing, before I set up one of the drives
as type tz89.
