We use LTO-2 drives for SQL and Oracle backups and I am averaging 3x1
compression on tape. The three largest amounts of data written to a
single tape have been 842 GB, 857 GB and 966 GB. When I say I average
3x1 compression it is because most backups are 600+ GB written to tape.
I can't wait till we upgrade from IBM 4560 SLX to IBM 3500 (aka 3584)
Tape Library with FC drives. I'm almost drooling. IMHO it seems at least
as far as Tape Drives go that IBM has gotten it correct. I use a larger
block size than the default 64KB on Windows servers and can sustain
write speeds of 70 MB /sec.

Thanks,

Dana

Running Solaris 9 server and storage nodes with fiber attached IBM
LTOIII drives. Getting anywhere from 80-120mbs second on lan free
backups. We are getting over 4TB of NDMP data on one tape. We are seeing
4-1 compression on tape. Has anyone seen this kind of number? We have
tested restores with no issues. But over 4TB on one tape. Seems crazy!!

7.2.2 on HPUX works perfectly with our LTO3 fiber attached drives.
Zero problems with the drives. Average tape capacitiy is 1035GB per
tape (lots of oracle stuff).
