In regard to: [Networker] LTO-3 (go with IBM or HP?) hitting from...:
We're about to receive a new ADIC Scalar i2k tape library with LTO-3
drives.
What's the word on IBM vs HP LTO-3 drives ?
We're not using ADIC, but our library vendor (StorageTek) strongly
advocated HP LTO-3 drives. Apparently STK has seen a much lower failure
rate with HP LTO drives than with other drives. That could be just old
data (i.e. against LTO-1 or LTO-2, and not relevant for LTO-3) or it could
be something peculiar to STK, but we took their advice and went with HP
drives. HP support was pretty much worthless when STK and I were asking
for recommended stinit.def entries for using LTO-3 on Linux. We
eventually ended up writing our own based on the LTO-1 stinit.def entry
and the tech manuals for the drives.
I've seen reports that the IBM drives are just slightly faster, but not
significantly so.
