LTO-3 drives can run at half speed, and I believe some other speed
breakpoints as well... So even if your network does turn out to be a
bottleneck there should not be a problem with shoe-shining your
drives...
You're right that it will step down to lesser speeds (apparently) without
shoe shining, but that still means that you're not going to push one tape
drive to even close to its best throughput.
We're just moving to LTO-3 here now, and I'll be very interested to see
if the speed-matching claims are more marketing than technical truth...
