Check nic and switch port issues. IF they are not in sync, say both running
100/full duplex you will see what you described.

Subject: [Networker] windows backup goes slow and fails

Hi,

I have a particular WinXP machine on my network that does start the backup,
but after a little while the speed becomes ridiculusly slow (a few kb/s) and
eventualy idles. The save fails after some time passes.

Does anyone has seen this before?

Cheers,
Athanasios
