Re: [Networker] windows backup goes slow and fails

Probably not the problem in this case, but worth mentioning...
We had a Windows2000 server with a 300gb partition on it containing around
70,000 files (so not a huge amount).
It had an Intel Pro MT dual port gigabit card in it, and we got around 30mb/sec
out of it and were fairly happy. (We had NIC teaming set up in redundnacy mode
ie it didn;t load balance, purely automatic failover should a port or switch
die (each port into a different core switch).
We then upgraded the machine to Windows 2003 (no hardware changed), and
suddenly the backup perfomance dropped through the floor to around 3mb/sec.
We tried different drivers (new ones, old ones) and it made no difference.
We noticed that if we set the card to 100mb/sec rather than gigabit, we got
around 10mb/sec out of it.
What eventually fixed it for us was to uncheck the 'Offload' options for the
card. Not sure of the terminology, but basically it uses the host CPU rather
than process on the card.
It immediately shot back up to 30mb/sec.
Be interested to hear if anyone else has seen this problem. We're going to try
a different card to see if it's peculiar to this card.
Allan.

I had a similar problem with workstations and servers. I found that the
WINSOCK was corrupted. The follow links will explain better then I could:

Subject: windows backup goes slow and fails
Hi,
I have a particular WinXP machine on my network that does
start the backup, but after a little while the speed becomes
ridiculusly slow (a few kb/s) and eventualy idles. The save
fails after some time passes.
Does anyone has seen this before?
Cheers,
Athanasios
