Oops. I meant portmapper can be turned off. Being at a university,
attempts are made to hack the systems here many times a day, either by
overt action or through script kiddies and I have not yet had my NetWorker
server hacked and it runs portmapper and the full suite of rpc services
with no ports blocked, except to the outside.
