Re: [Networker] Merits of cloning versus dual backups?

As I said in a prior post... I'm not sure if you would technically call
it multiplexing(only one stream of data from nsrclone), but if you pass
a list to nsrclone that contains more than one ssid on a single volume
the multiplexing of those ssids will remain.
Example
----Start ssidlistfile----
2222222222
4444444444
6666666666
----End ss-dlistfile
Original volume contains ssids
1111111111
2222222222
3333333333
4444444444
5555555555
6666666666
$ nsrclone -v -b clonepool -S -f ssidlistfile
If the chunks on the original tape are laid out like this(very simple
example):
[111...][222...][111...][222...][333...][444...][111...][222...][333...]
[444...][111...][555...][222...][333...][111...][444...][666...][222...]
[333...][111...][666...]
Then I believe the chunks on the clone tape will be:
[222...][222...][444...][222...][444...][222...][444...][666...][222...]
[666...]
I'd loved to hear a Legato person chime in here to verify or correct
what I'm saying?!?!
Hope this helps,
Joel

Subject: Re: [Networker] Merits of cloning versus dual backups?
enclosed some cloning principles we use:
1st: we backup to multiple pools
(i.e. Oracle to OraclePool, Notes to NotesPool, other to Default)
2nd: we clone all the backups to ONE clonepool
reason: we have to move not that much cartridges!
(the so called "volume cloning" is no help here,
one input tape --> one (ore two :-) output tapes)
3rd: we send cloning volumes offline (!near)
reasons: - it gives me a much better feeling to RECOVER
from verified tapes instead of sending them
offline for "disaster recovery"
(it's quite possible they never get used) but ... :-(
- there had been (?) an issue, that NetWorker
accepted the clone saveset ONLY, if the original
had been marked "suspect"
(but this seems to be gone away, if I understand this
thread
correctly)
4th: we only return cartridges which have been already recycled
(i.e. mminfo -q volrecycle -q !near -r volume)
But one question seems to be still open:
Does cloning some kind of de-multiplexing or not?
Regards -sg-
