Thanks, Julia, but without the * I get the same result:
* servername.mitchell.com:MSSQL:SF_V nsrsqlsv: Database SF_V does not exist.

The only way it seems to work is when I specify the entire database name:
servername.mitchell.com: MSSQL:SF_V4QQ level=full, 893 MB 00:04:04 1
file(s)

or all databases:
servername.mitchell.com: MSSQL: level=full, 139 GB 09:17:58 264 file(s)

My main problem here in trying to make smaller pieces is that my list of
databases is dynamic -- older databases get archived and removed, and new
databases are constantly being added.

Don't use the *. We are using SQL lightspeed to compress our SQL databases.
It seems to be working quite well. It compresses them to about 70% of their
original size and then I can backup without using the BSM for SQL.
