Hi Sandeep,

As my esteemed colleague Craig Mc points out, it depends.

If you've a good network between the two TSM Servers then it may help
matters - I was working with a customer very recently who was wanting to do
exactly the same as you're planning, moving around 3TBs of data for a single
live backup client from a Windows to AIX TSM Server with around a 200Mb
network between the two sites/servers. After doing some simple planning and
testing with them on some sample data, the network transfer EXPORT/IMPORT
came out to be marginally faster than writing to tape on one TSM server,
transporting tapes and then reading back in on the other. Plus, with some of
the extras in the EXPORT NODE command in recent versions, as the node was
still 'live' it enabled us to perform some very simple delta 'top-up'
EXPORTS to ensure that, at the point the client was cut over from the old to
the new TSM Server, the backup data on the new servers was completely up to
date and synchronised with the old.

Hope that helps,

Hi david,

thanks for your reply. can you suggest if there are many nodes and there
data is huge as they are Database nodes, which one should be faster
i.e. exporting node to sequential media and then importing from 2nd TSM
server or exporting node dirextly to 2nd server.

Thanks
Sandeep
