I can't speak for the original poster, but I've worked for shops that
preferred not to depend on locally written software. That way, staff
turnover wasn't nearly as much an issue; whoever was the SysAdmin of
the month merely needed to know what vendors to call if something
started acting up.

Besides, commercial software *must* be better than any locally
written code, right? (Don't answer that; that was thinly disguised
sarcasm, tinged with disgust.)
