Thank you for the advice.
Our company has had these HP 718s for some 5 years or so.
They have been reliable, and only 1 of the 4 units we have has needed
repair. Very Reliable!
We have hundreds of DLT tapes in that 5 year history at our off-site tape
vault.
We will probably go with the new SDLT tapes when new $$ comes in, as the
SDLT drives can read the vaulted DLT tapes.
Problem solved (I think)!
I was saying my rosary this morning, and by divine revelation (so to
speak), just realized that all I need to do is make a schedule with the
new mgmt class. This is so simple, I could just spit!
I feel so stupid asking this question. I wish I could recall it.
Anyway, the learning continues!

Subject: Re: Question on defeating TSM strengths: due to
budget constraints
Ken,
I hate to say this, but I am coming from Arcserve with a DLT8000 in an
Overland Library to TSM with a 3590 in a 3494 now. My recommendation
would be to use any other drive than the DLT's. We had a Quantum, and
this is truly only my opinion, but dealing with the DLT is not something I
would ever wish on anyone. I don't know anything about the HP 718, but I
was looking at other technologies to move to before we invested in the
hardware and TSM. At least make sure you invest in something with a fast
transfer rate and proven reliability. I may not be helping much, but
hopefully, I can give you something to watch out for, at least in general
terms.

Enviro:
W2K TSM server 5.1.6.3
W2K client 5.1.5.15
8 W2K/NT4 servers as clients
120 GB disk pool
Backup ~130 GB/day
14 HR backup window
Due to budget constraints (meaning $$ for libraries), I must make TSM work
under this situation:
1-drive DLT HP 718 library (8-slots)
Weekly full (absolute) backup + incremental tapes go to off-site tape
vault each week.
Last week of month, make archive tapes for 7-year data retention.
I have the STANDARD domain, the STANDARD Mgmt class (as default TSM
install).
I have created another Mgmt class for FULL_Backups (copy mode absolute,
etc., etc., etc.).
My question:
1) How do I get the client servers to execute this FULL_Backup Mgmt class
on a weekend schedule, while maintaining the STANDARD Mgmt class for M-F?
I know this may have been discussed in the archives, but haven't found
anything useful there.
Can someone point out this scenario in any of the redbooks?
