Have you tried running expiration with skipdirs=yes?  This may run quicker
and expire most of the data.

When we had long runing expirations we did this (also running regular
expiration).

Another of my problems is that expiration hasn't been able to run from
beginning to end, I set a duration of approximately 7 hours.  Could this
also be causing performance/DB growth?  Thanks!
