It's not just the number of files, it's also the number of directories.

We have one server with about 1.5 million files, but they're spread over
about 700,000 directories (I know, I know - I didn't design it). There is
extremely low update activity on this server. It took 20 hours to backup
before journalling, and about 5 minutes after. Magic!
